CBDOne of the largest misconceptions about CBD oil is the idea that it comes exclusively from marijuana. Although marijuana plants do contain CBD, products using CBD extracted from marijuana can contain higher concentrations of THC, tetrahydrocannabinol which is the most infamous cannabinoid due to its high or euphoria inducing properties.

How can CBD oil products be legal and not euphoria inducing?

Hemp and marijuana come from the same plant family, Cannabis Sativa. The primary difference between the two is their level of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the illegal, psychoactive cannabinoid. According to the Agricultural Act of 2018, U.S. legislation describes legal hemp plants as containing less than 0.3 percent THC. Within the provisions of the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 proposed to remove hemp (cannabis with less than 0.3% THC) and making it an ordinary agricultural commodity. That being said, states can still decide if they want to allow the sale and production of hemp based products.

What is the hype about CBD?

Retail companies have spent millions of dollars to promote the benefits of their hemp based products. Some brands have claimed that their CBD are “lifesavers “and “unbelievable cures”. The Food and Drug Administration has warned companies to stop making “unfounded claims” that CBD can help treat cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, A.D.H.D. and opioid withdrawal.

How to choose a CBD product?

cbd 3A cautious consumer should seek a CBD product that undergoes rigorous testing throughout the entire manufacturing and production processes. Additionally, products should undergo extensive third party chemical testing through independent laboratories to ensure the purity of the CBD product. Although independent testing is very expensive, it is the only viable option for preserving the valuable properties of hemp, while eliminating the presence of psychoactive THC. This will ensure only high quality CBD oil is contained in a CBD product. Independent purity testing is much like the testing that pharmaceutical companies provide for their prescription medications.

What is an example of independent purity testing and why is it important?

Sophisticated scientific analysis such as gas or high performance liquid chromatography testing involves continued submission of manufactured CBD products to ensure the high quality and purity of notable commercial products such as those manufactured by cbdM

You can learn more about CBD products by visiting our locations and speaking with one of our experts. They will help you identify what type of product will be best for your therapy.

What is a compounding pharmacy

Many patients have unique health needs that commercially available, manufactured medications cannot meet. For these patients, personalized medication solutions – prescribed by licensed practitioners and prepared by trained, licensed pharmacists – often are the only way to better health.

Working with a physician, a compounding pharmacist can meet individual needs of children, adults and animals. Whether it’s an allergy to a dye or ingredient, a need for a different strength, or a preference for a different dosage form, compounding pharmacists provide patients with solutions to their medication needs.

Why Compounding?
  • When needed medications are discontinued by or generally unavailable from pharmaceutical companies, often because the medications are no longer profitable to manufacture;
  • When the patient is allergic to certain preservatives, dyes or binders in available off-the-shelf medications;
  • When treatment requires tailored dosage strengths for patients with unique needs (for example, an infant);
  • When a pharmacist can combine several medications a patient is taking to increase compliance;
  • When a patient cannot ingest the medication in its commercially available form and a pharmacist can prepare the medication in cream, liquid or other form that the patient can easily take; and
How is it Regulated?

All pharmacies and pharmacists are licensed and strictly regulated by State Boards of Pharmacy. Compounding is a core component of pharmacy and has always been subject to the oversight and monitoring of these agencies and the state legislatures who decide upon the way pharmacy compounding should be regulated within their borders. Additionally, the Food & Drug Administration has authority over some aspects of compounded prescriptions at the federal level under the direction of Congress.

Standards set by the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) are integrated into the day-to-day practice of pharmacy compounding and are mandated by law in most states. Even greater oversight comes through accreditation from a variety of non-profit agencies that establish and survey on guidelines designed to improve quality in the compounding process.

Local Support for Wound Care

Experts in the field of wound care

When you need wound care, you learn quickly that it's more than just about bandages. The skin is the body’s largest organ, and its primary function is to protect us from bacterial and viral pathogens, ultraviolet radiation, water, and mechanical and chemical assaults. The skin plays a  vital role in our life and serves many complex functions. It’s important for us to know how wounds heal to pinpoint why a wound won’t heal.

At Jayhawk Patient Supply our in-house wound care specialist Paige Conlin is there to guide you. We offer a complete array of products and services for wound care and several important advantages for you:

  • we are the local supplier which saves you time and hassle
  • we guide you how to properly care for your wound at home
  • we do the research on hard-to-find specialty items
  • we stay current with the most innovative wound care modalities

About the growing need for wound care

Growing elderly population: The growth rate of the over-65 age group for the next 20 years is nearly triple that of the under-65 age group. As we age, our skin is more susceptible to skin breakdown.

Escalating costs across all health care settings: In addition to the increase in the elderly population, there is another factor that brings wound care to the forefront—escalating costs. More than 10 million Americans, mostly elderly, suffer from slow-healing or non-healing chronic wounds.

The growth of diabetes: One of the major contributing factors to the continued growth of non-healing chronic wounds is the increased prevalence of diabetes. More than 29 million Americans have diabetes, and 1 in 4 doesn’t know it. Another 86 million adults—more than one in three U.S. adults—have pre-diabetes, where their blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as type 2 diabetes. Compounding the problem is the reinfection rate: some wound care experts estimate that 70 percent of all chronic wounds eventually re-open.

Oxygen Therapy

Choose a provider who will stay with you

respironics everflo concentratorWhen you choose Jayhawk Patient Supply at discharge from hospital, we maintain regular contact with you to ensure your success with oxygen therapy for as long as needed. This reduces the chance for rehospitalization and increases your overall health.

Oxygen therapy has changed dramatically due to technological advancements and miniaturization. Although some patients may require larger oxygen cylinders, Jayhawk Patient Supply is on the cutting edge of innovative oxygen equipment. Jayhawk Patient Supply works closely with our patients and their healthcare providers to offer oxygen therapies that fit both the clinical needs and the lifestyle of our patients.

Our goal is increased clinical success and reduced hospitalizations.

Home Fill Portable Oxygen Therapy

M2 oxygenedited handWhen clinically appropriate, some patients prefer the convenience of oxygen therapy that does not require planning and the disruption of in-home oxygen cylinder delivery. Jayhawk Patient Supply offers discrete oxygen cylinders that can be as small as a coffee mug and weigh a mere 2.2 pounds. The Home Fill Oxygen System allows patients to easily and safely fill their own oxygen cylinders as needed in the convenience of their homes. The size of these cylinders can be easily changed according to the differences in the individual patient needs. In addition to having your person oxygen cylinders, patients using only their personal small oxygen cylinders are potentially exposed to fewer bacteria and viruses, which might reside on large, exchanged cylinders.

SimplyGoPortable3Portable Oxygen Concentrators

Jayhawk Patient Supply continually sources unique and innovative solutions to patient care needs. Lighweight portable concentrators that are airline approved for travel are available to our patients when clinically appropriate. When we work in collaboration with healthcare providers to offer our patients unique technologies, the results are improved patient oxygen therapy compliance and improved clinical outcomes.

Sleep Disorders/Sleep Apnea

alarm clockSleep disorders such as sleep apnea are recognized as dangerous, life-shortening and life-damaging disorders. According to the American Sleep Apnea Association, more than 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. There are two types:

1) Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
2) Central.

Your doctor will prescribe treatment for your specific diagnosis.

WHY SHOULD YOU TREAT SLEEP APNEA?
Sleep apnea puts you at greater risk for high blood pressure, chronic heart failure, atrial fibrillation, stroke, and other cardiovascular problems.

Symptoms

If you have trouble falling asleep at night or wake up frequently during the night, you are probably aware that a sleep disorder may be the cause. But other symptoms may also indicate a sleep disorder, such as: AirMini Lifestyle3 web

  • waking unrefreshed (non-restorative sleep)
  • daytime sleepiness
  • reported snoring
  • difficulty concentrating
  • forgetfulness
  • accidents at work or while driving fatigued
  • depression
  • and other symptoms

If you suffer from one or more of these symptoms, talk to your doctor about scheduling a sleep study, which is needed to confirm a clinical diagnosis.

The Epworth Sleepiness Scale

Answer these questions and discuss the results with your doctor. Use the key as a guide to rate how likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired. This refers to your usual way of life in recent times. Even if you have not done some of these things recently, try to work out how they would have affected you.

0 = no chance of dozing
1 = slight chance of dozing
2 = moderate chance of dozing
3 = high chance of dozing

SITUATION  CHANCE OF DOZING
Sitting and reading
Sitting inactive in a public place (e.g a theater or a meeting)
As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break
Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit
Sitting and talking to someone
Sitting quietly after a lunch without alcohol
Watching TV

Respiratory Disease

What is bronchiectasis?Woman coughing

Of the 15 million people ith COPD in the United States, studies estimate that up to 57.6% may have bronchiectasis. Bronchietasis occurs when the walls of the patient airways (bronchi) thicken as a result of the infection and/or chronic inflammation and results in mucus accumulating. As a consequence, the walls of the patient's lungs become thickened. Therefore patients with bronchiectasis experience periodic flare-ups of their breathing difficulties, called exacerbations. People with bronchiectasis can experience periods of good and bad health. Some patients can start to have problems over a few days.

Innovative compression vest treats chronic disorder

Vicious Cycle ImageMillions of Americans suffering from chronic respiratory illnesses, specifically bronchiectasis, get caught in the cycle of recurring infections, often leading to hospitalization. Antibiotics help in the short term, but the cycle of reinfection continues. Airway clearance therapy with a compression vest is beneficial in many of these cases. AffloVest is a mobile inflatable therapy vest worn for short treatments to help patients expell mucus. Often dubbed "breathing vests," they are an option to allow patients to receive therapy while going about their normal lives. Patients can exchange the vest if their size changes. And because it is mobile, patients are not tethered or hooked to a pump that impedes movement. By using the vests, taking medication as prescribed and eating a nutritious diet, patients will likely increase their quality of life and decrease their rate of hospital readmissions. Since patient compliance is key to the effective use of external percussive devices, the health care practitioner should consider patient compliance, comfort, required usage and vest mobility.

You can try on AffloVest at Jayhawk Patient Supply on SW 6th Street. Or call us for more information at 785-235-9700.

You may benefit from AffloVest if you: AffloVest for web

  • experience nagging or chronic cough
  • experience shortness of breath with little or no exertion
  • experience recurring lung infections
  • take repeated rounds of antibiotics
  • require repeated hospitalizations

Talk to your doctor about being screened for bronchiectasis and the options you have for airway clearance therapy.

History of a community pharmacy

Jayhawk Pharmacy damaged by 1966 tornadoJayhawk Pharmacy, downtown at 10th & Kansas, was damaged by 1966 tornado. Photo used with permission from the Topeka Capital-Journal.Jayhawk Drugs, founded by Robert E. Drumm in 1952, was originally located at 10th & Kansas Avenue in downtown Topeka. It was heavily damaged by the 1966 tornado that tore through much of Topeka. Jayhawk Drug was later located in the Brookwood Shopping Center and called Brookwood Jayhawk Drug, Inc. In the mid '60s, 29th and Gage was a dirt intersection and SW 29th was only a two lane road. In addition to the drug store, it had a soda fountain, cosmetics, perfumes, gifts, post office, tobacco products, record albums, alarm clocks, water sprinklers, golf balls,  magazines and nearly anything imaginable.

As a child in grade school, Michael K. Conlin had the opportunity to have his family live in the Brookwood neighborhood near “Jayhawk Drug” and witnessed the influence of a local community pharmacist upon the health of his family. During his walks home after school to have a nickel cherry coke at the soda fountain, Mike admired the owner and “druggist” Bob Drumm for his personal and professional commitment to the local community. During junior high school Mike learned the importance of his personal relationship with Mr. Drumm. Mr. Drumm gave Mike and other kids in the neighborhood a quarter for an A grade, a dime for a B and a thump on the head for a C. Bob was a part of the lives of every family that he and his staff cared for. This is a lesson that has stayed with Conlin throughout his pharmacy career.

With the inspiration and encouragement of Mr. Drumm and a high school biology teacher, Mike enrolled at the University of Kansas in 1972. After earning a degree in cellular biology, he pursued a degree in phamacy. During his pharmacy education, Conlin had the opportunity to return to Jayhawk Drug, the neighborhood drug store that he grew up around. During his pharmacy school education Conlin worked evenings and weekends to support his educational costs. This experience further instilled the importance of becoming a community pharmacist providing a personal level of patient care to help solve a patient’s health challenges. Conlin graduated from the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy in 1978, with his eye on becoming a community pharmacy owner in the future.

Mike ConlinMike Conlin and his wife, Cathy, purchased Jayhawk Pharmacy in 1988.In 1988 Conlin and his wife Cathy purchased Jayhawk Drug from Bob Drumm. The pharmacy at this time was located in a large medical clinic in the hospital corridor in Topeka. Over the course of the next 30 years Conlin and his family have sought to become strong part of the Topeka medical community. In 1997 Jayhawk Pharmacy expanded its scope of practice to include Jayhawk Pharmacy Custom Prescription Center in southwest Topeka.  Custom prescription compounding offers Jayhawk’s patients unique medications that may be difficult to swallow or no longer commercially manufactured but are clinically effective. Jayhawk Pharmacy Custom Prescription Center’s patients also include companion animals to solve their unique medication needs. Conlin became nationally accredited as a Certified Menopause Educator by the North American Menopause Society in 1998 and is the only pharmacist in northeast Kansas with this credential. Mike also holds fellowships with the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists, the American College of Apothecaries and the American College of Veterinary Pharmacists.

Recognizing the need of his patients to have a complete continuum of care, Conlin further expanded the business model of Jayhawk Pharmacy by opening Jayhawk Patient Supply in 2009. Located near the Topeka medical community and hospitals, this durable medical equipment division of Jayhawk offers patients state of the art portable oxygen systems, light weight wheelchairs, noninvasive ventilators as well as portable wound vacuums and more.

JP 360 LogoConlin’s original dream was to develop a 360 degree continuum of patient care model in northeast Kansas. Jayhawk Pharmacy, Jayhawk Pharmacy Custom Prescription Center and Jayhawk Patient Supply, collectively know as Jayhawk Pharmacy and Patient Supply works collaboratively with patient families and the regional medical community to anticipate the needs of their patients to provide a higher standard of care that is in the best interests of their patients. Their collective goals are to improve their patients health and wellbeing, and to reduce hospitalizations.

As the first person in his family to pursue a university education, Conlin recognizes the importance of higher education. The staff at Jayhawk Pharmacy and Patient Supply are encouraged to seek professional educational opportunities for self-enrichment and to enhance patient care. The staff at Jayhawk Pharmacy and Patient Supply have sought and achieved the highest level of educational credentialing in their fields of expertise.

Menopause Management

Women who are experiencing menopause can turn to our highly trained menopause specialists at Jayhawk Pharmacy Custom Prescription Center for treatment. We offer options to make menopause easier and more comfortable, including bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)

Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

As we age, our bodies go through changes that are normal and common. One of these changes is fluctuations in hormone levels. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) uses customized medications (in the form of hormones that are bio-identical to the ones produced by the body) to replenish the levels in the body to “normal” levels. The goal of this replacement therapy is to alleviate any symptoms that the fluctuating levels may be causing.

Symptoms include (but are not limited to):

  • Hot flashes
  • Moodiness/emotional swings
  • Lack of libido
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • and many others

With BHRT, medications can be custom-tailored to each patient, targeting the specific symptoms that the patient is experiencing and therefore providing optimum symptom-relief and improvement in quality of life. In addition to being able to create specific doses, our compounding pharmacists here at Jayhawk Custom Pharmacy can create many different dosage forms to accommodate each patient. Creams, gels, lozenges, and sublingual tablets are just some of the many forms of medications we can create here at Jayhawk Custom Pharmacy.

Whether male or female, many patients benefit from the symptom relief and quality-of-life improvement provided by BHRT.
